You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on a stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
–Matthew 5:14-16 (NIV)
When I was in Hollywood recently, I posted on my Facebook wall: If you had time for one more thing in L.A., what would you do?
One of my college mates responded simply: Leave
That made me think– What is the attraction of Hollywood? It is a city of “lights, camera, and action” on a hill. It broadcasts promises to fulfill human wants.
Yet Hollywood is not The City of Light.
Scripture says that a city on a hill cannot be hidden. Hollywood does not try to hide; rather, it is all about exposure, but not transparency. It is a city known for role-playing and catering to what a person wants. It is a city that cannot fulfill what a person needs, though. So, the best thing is to leave. Or stay. In either case, find where– whether it be Dallas or Hollywood– your spiritual light can bring glory to God.
[Disclaimer: We had a very rejuvenating 24 hours in Hollywood. It is a beautiful city with a lot of entertaining sights. This metaphor is in no way meant to disparage Hollywood or Los Angeles or the people who live there. Peace.]
